Laboratory Experience for Faculty

NNIN Laboratory Experience for Faculty

A diversity enhancement program

The NNIN Laboratory Experience for Faculty (LEF) program is a summer research experience for selected faculty in one of the 14 NNIN laboratories. The Laboratory Experience for Faculty program is designed promote diversity in the NNIN user base and within the nanotechnology community. The program offers an REU-like paid summer internship for minority faculty or faculty at primarily minority serving institutions to conduct research at an NNIN site.

This program is appropriate for faculty with a nascent nanotechnology research program that would benefit significantly from NNIN facilities. Alternatively, for faculty at smaller institutions, it offers an exposure to nanotechnology research that they can bring back to their classrooms to enrich their instruction or to serve as a base for a new course.

This is a national scope program by NNIN but applications are through the individual sites. Interested faculty should contact one of the NNIN sites where he/she may be interested in working. If unsure, please contact Lynn Rathbun, NNIN Program Manager (rathbun@cnf.cornell.edu), and he will advise on an appropriate site. Selected applicants will be paired with an appropriate faculty or staff member Each site may nominate several potential participants to NNIN. NNIN management will make the final selection. Information on each site and their interests and appropriate contact information can be found elsewhere on this web site.

The program will provide selected participants with a stipend, travel, and housing, as well as access to NNIN facilities. Participants should be available for 8-10 weeks during the summer 2013, although the schedule is flexible.

Eligible faculty (women, underrepresented minorities, or faculty at predominantly minority serving institutions) are encouraged to apply. US Citizens or Permanent Residents at US institutions only. Nominations from the sites are due to NNIN in early January, so you should apply to the site by Dec. 20. Specific application requirements and deadlines will be posted in Fall 2012.

If you have specific questions or need direction to an appropriate site, contact Lynn Rathbun, Ph.D, rathbun@cnf.cornell.edu
